The Neopets Team announced 50 new species on April 1st, 2005. Many of these species would go on to become petpets. Fifteen of these species would be polled on, with Lamameeah winning and becoming the Gnorbu. Two notable species got none of this luck: the Varwolf and the Quaturchin. The Quaturchin stands out due to not just having a quality design and a friendly look to it, but just how well it actually matches the Neopets artstyle, especially when compared to other pets teased in the post.
In the early morning of March 6th, 2025, Neopets accidentally broke two parts of the site: The Rainbow Pool obtained an "Unknown Species" and the Styling Studio got the "Varwolf." This shows that the current Neopets Team remembers this posting, as well. This shows us one of two things: either TNT wants to pull a similar April Fool's joke on us or, more likely, they are interested in adding a new pet. Why waste resources designing something wholly new when you have some other potentially popular designs just laying around...? Logically, a new pet makes sense for the site. They want to make Neopets profitable, and they're trying what they can. They have two mobile games, they have a plot (which is currently on pause as of my writing this), and they probably want to do more if just to show the world that they are truly bringing Neopets BACK. What better move than to introduce a new pet species? Could this save Neopets?
The Varwolf glitch proves that at least some eyes are on the April 1st, 2005 post with possibly interest in actually bringing us some of its contents. The reason I'm singling out Quaturchin is because, simply put, I love them. The moment I saw it on the list of pets for the joke, I knew more than anything else I needed one. It was, by far, my favorite Neopet design of all time - and nothing even comes close. It makes me incredibly sad that unless we act, get together and show that we love this design, TNT will most likely forget it and leave it in the dirt. It's the perfect design for a pet. In terms of design complexity, it's comparable to pets such as Draiks, Ruki, or Lutari. Outside of fish and Nimmos, there's not really any aquatic options outside of Maraquan pets, which aren't as customizable as we'd like. Furthermore, Quaturchin have the perfect anatomy for the customization system, with their similar anatomy to other pets making it easier for them to receive new customizations than even the Varwolf.
Even if previously released cosmetics never came to the Quaturchin, being compatible with future additions ensures that it will still have more customization options than most Maraquan pets. While a pet color might be one way TNT can introduce aquatic-themed pets, it's ultimately a very stifling method that forces people like myself who want aquatics outside of Flotsam and Jetsam to have to obtain a specific item in order to get it. That's not much fun.
I've recently been encouraging other users to show some love for our waterbound friends, and I'd like to use this page as a gallery of all Quaturchin fanart I find. Please, reach out to Gabumun if you have some Quaturchin art you'd like showcased here, as well! I'm also happy to partner with other pages so that we can spread the word about the world's best amphibious Neopets, and hopefully encourage TNT to release them once and for all!
I also highly encourage you to send a Letter to the Editors of The Neopian Times emphasizing that you want to legalize Quaturchins and get some of your own! If they see we want them badly enough, they'd have to bring them!
